The Funeral The funeral was on Thanksgiving Day. Thanksgiving Day of all days to have the funeral. Mom said that Thanksgiving Day was the best day to have the funeral since most of the family had already planned to be at the house for Thanksgiving anyway. She refused to change the day of the funeral. So, the funeral was on Thanksgiving Day. I was sad, but I didn't really tell anyone. I thought that Thanksgiving Day was a stupid day to have a funeral. It was a holiday. Who buries anyone on a holiday? Mom wouldn't change the day. She was being so strong and not crying. It was making me mad. But that was Mom, a rock. I just kept quiet and stayed in my room. Relatives, church members, neighbors, and other people were coming over to the house left and right. It was a mad house. Almost everyone brought over some form of chicken. Fried chicken, baked chicken, broil chicken, I was sick of chicken. I thought I was going to sprout wings and fly. Terri, well she was Terri. She kept trying to talk to me. She was getting on my nerves. She was talking about God. I really didn't want to hear anything about God. It was what I needed to hear, but I didn't want to hear about God. She was getting through to me, but I wasn't going to tell her that. She made sense and I knew she was right, but I wasn't going to tell her that. At the funeral, Eld. Hayes was in his usual serious form as he officiated the service, "All the grief of this funeral can be seen. That's why I won't bore your patience. Many ministers and preachers talk and preach about the deceased, but I am going to talk about giving thanks after little Miss Terri Hopkins sings a solo." Terri sung as she had never sung before. The girl was amazing. Eld. Hayes began his eulogy by talking about giving thanks to God. It was a very appropriate sermon, being that it was Thanksgiving. At the funeral, people talked about how special Dad was and how he had touched their lives. It was amazing to know that Dad was a wonderful man who had touched so many lives. |
